My goal as a Council member is to maintain the qualities that make San Mateo such a great place in which to live & work & raise a family. My goal as a Council member has been to maintain the qualities that make San Mateo such an attractive place in which to live, work and raise a family. Our challenge is to enhance the quality of life we treasure in each of our neighborhoods and preserve the features that make our city unique. I share your concern and frustration that traffic, congestion, and unwanted change are overwhelming our quality of life. In the next four years it will be more important than ever to carefully balance any new development with the need for open space and to ensure that new buildings and additions fit neighborhood character. Reducing congestion is a top priority. As a member of the county's congestion management agency and the regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission I am working to decrease traffic and increase public transit with expanded shuttle service and more pedestrian/bicycle access downtown and to our rail stations. Public involvement is another essential. I am pleased that one of my initiatives, the Community Compass, involved several hundred residents and business people getting together to discuss what they would like our city to be and to do. I hope to make this an ongoing activity. A community functions at its best when its citizens are actively involved. Here in San Mateo, an increase in public participation by our neighborhoods and by our business community is uderway. One current example is the Transportation Corridor study. A committee of 17 representatives of homeowners and business (I am the Council's representative on the committee) will spend two years studying and making recommendations for the future of the Bay Meadows racetrack and for development along the rail corridor from Hayward Park to the Belmont border. The outcome will have enormous impact on San Mateo's future. I hope to work on many other issues in the years ahead, such as transforming our Shoreline into a beautiful recreation area and creating a major park (equal in size to Central Park) as part of the new Bay Meadows development. I look forward to working with you in the future to make San Mateo an even more desirable place in which to live. |
