DENNIS HERRERA for CITY ATTORNEY DENNIS HERRERA's extensive legal and public service experience has prepared him well for the broad range of issues faced each day by the San Francisco City Attorney's Office.

A LEGAL PROFESSIONAL DENNIS HERRERA, a partner in the San Francisco law firm Kelly, Gill, Sherburne & Herrera, has extensive legal experience in one of San Francisco's most important industries. His firm provides business counsel and practices business litigation with an emphasis on complex commercial and maritime transactions.

Kelly, Gill, Sherburne & Herrera is the legal counsel for a number of the leading U.S. maritime companies. DENNIS HERRERA is the lead labor negotiator for the second largest operator of U.S. flag vessels with unions that represent over 900 U.S. seafarers. He also serves as trustee of four pension and benefit plans that manage over $200 million in assets.

In one of his most significant recent transactions, he represented American President Lines, Ltd., in connection with its $1 billion merger with Neptune Orient Lines, and negotiated with the United States government and six labor unions for the approval and transfers necessary to complete the merger.

DENNIS HERRERA's legal and administrative skills took him to Washington, D.C., where he functioned as Chief of Staff to the United States Maritime Administration during the first Clinton Administration. There he directed 1,100 staff members and supervised the agency's daily operations. He played a key role in implementing the National Shipbuilding Initiative and formulating the Maritime Security Program, which revitalized the national shipbuilding industry and preserved jobs for American maritime labor.

Prior to his service in Washington, DENNIS HERRERA served in private practice and as a Deputy San Francisco City Attorney with a broad range of civil litigation responsibilities in the state and federal courts.

DENNIS HERRERA is a graduate of Villanova University and George Washington University School of Law. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1989.

A COMMUNITY LEADER DENNIS HERRERA has served in many San Francisco community leadership positions. As past President and current member of the San Francisco Police Commission, he is involved in setting Police Department policies, developing officer training procedures, and adjudicating police discipline matters.

Prior to his appointment to the Police Commission, DENNIS HERRERA served on the San Francisco Public Transportation Commission, setting policy for Muni and overseeing its annual $285 million operating budget.

DENNIS HERRERA also has served on the Waterfront Advisory Board established by the San Francisco Port Commission, promoting maritime uses for the Port and advising on appropriate economic and land use policies for the Bay shoreline.

DENNIS HERRERA also serves as Treasurer of the San Francisco Democratic Party, selected by his colleagues on the San Francisco Democratic Party Central Committee.

DENNIS HERRERA oversees the welfare of at-risk youth as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Boardmember. As a Boardmember of the Mission Council on Substance Abuse for the Spanish Speaking, Inc., DENNIS HERRERA is a leader in an organization that provides assistance and counseling services to those who suffer from substance abuse.

Dennis his wife, Anne, and their son, Declan, who was born October 1, 2001, live in San Francisco's Potrero Hill district.
