As a SF/Brisbane Municipal Utility District Director, I will push for affordable rates, a dramatic increase in solar and other renewable energy sources and closing down the Bayview Hunters point dirty power plant. I will also guarantee the public a strong voice in running our energy system.
If elected, I will continue the movement toward stripping ratepayer energy conservation funding from PG&E and allowing San Francisco to spend the money directly. I would also implement cost-effective energy efficiency measures, such as:
- Compact flourescents
- More effective rebates/standards for efficient appliances
- Aggressive implementation of rooftop solar photovoltaic
- Solar hot-water heating
- Free shade trees
- Low-flow showerheads
My targeted mix of power generating sources to meet San Francisco's power requirements include:
- 33% Fossil fuel
- 25% Hydroelectric
- 20% Wind
- 10% Solar Energy
- 10% Energy Conservation and Efficiency
- 2% Waste treatment plant methane through fuel cell
My target date for achieving these goals is the year 2010, through:
- Board President Ammiano's and Supervisor Leno's solar bond proposals
- Byron Sher's Renewables Portfolio Standard legislation (SB 532)
- Taking our power back from Turlock/Modesto
In terms of public power, I am working statewide to streamline the process for creating public power entities, but I am also very actively trying to merge the public power/environmental movements so that in the future, public power becomes a model for clean power. While my model for public power is the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) because of its emphasis on conservation, efficiency and renewables, I believe we can take the SFBMUD even further by creating the strongest possible relationship between public power advocates and the impressive Bay Area environmental community.
