Message to Voters

By Elinor G.A. "Elly" Langer

Candidate for Mayor; City of Santa Barbara

This information is provided by the candidate
As Mayor, I will listen to your concens and take decisive action. I will make a difference for this community.
Dear Voter:

By Election Day, all the candidates often sound alike. They tell you what they think you want to hear, not what they believe. I won't do that.

I've spent nearly 20 years working to make this community a better place to live, work, raise a family and retire. I spent 8 very rewarding years on the City Council, working together with the community, listening to your concerns, and taking decisive action. I am proud that together we revitalized our downtown, expanded our housing base, protected the character of our neighborhoods, and improved our parks.

I'm running for Mayor because in the time since I left city government, I have seen the Council shift away from listening and responding to citizens' concerns. I will bring that focus back to City Hall.

As Mayor, I will listen to your concerns and take decisive action. I will make a difference for this community.

Unlike my opponents,

· I would not have ignored the voices of almost 10,000 residents who signed petitions asking to be allowed to vote on narrowing our streets near the waterfront. I would have taken decisive action to put this issue before the votes in an advisory election.

· I would not have supported the latest version of the La Entrada project for lower State Street until it had been further redesigned to protect our views and to include some housing for local residents.

· I did not support the demolition of the Carrillo Hotel, which provided affordable housing to many senior citizens, and its replacement with a luxury business hotel. I certainly would not have allowed the developer to redesign the hotel without requiring that immediate steps be taken to include some housing in the project. After all this time, we still have only an unsightly hole at Carrillo and Chapala.

· I would have supported a living wage for City workers, but I would have voted to eliminate nonprofit organizations and private businesses from further consideration.

There are real differences among the candidates for Mayor. As Mayor, I will work with local residents, the County and other jurisdictions to reach consensus and solve our common problems, including transportation, housing, creek clean-up, and recreation.

If you have a question about my position on an issue, please call me at home, 966-0561. I'll tell you where I stand.

Please vote for Elinor Langer for Mayor.

Sincerely,

Elinor Langer
