Make a stand for YOUR issues. Vote #1 on the ballot this Nov. 6.

DEAR FELLOW SANTA BARBARAN,

I am asking for your endorsement, support and vote in the Santa Barbara City Council elections this November 6.

A 6th generation Southern Californian living here for 40 years, and son of a public school educator, I graduated from San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara City College. In that time I have witnessed fires, floods and the devastating 1969 oil spill that spoiled our coastline. These disasters point at the fragility of our environment.

We need to work regionally from Goleta to Carpinteria to ensure a "big picture," environmentally sensitive approach to growth, and we must insist on controlled growth in the South Coast. I will fight to preserve our standard of living by opposing any attempt to increase the density of our suburban neighborhoods.

I am also concerned about the critical housing shortage in our city. We will not be able to build enough housing in our beautiful city unless we include mixed-use housing/business in and near our core Downtown area and encourage new businesses to incorporate employee housing.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING. We need to encourage affordable housing for seniors and working families. We need to include mixed-use residential/business for security and vitality in and near our Downtown area and encourage new businesses to incorporate employee housing.

DENSITY. We must work regionally from Goleta to Carpinteria, and countywide, to ensure a "big picture" and eco-friendly approach to growth, and we must insist on controlled growth in the South Coast. I will preserve our standard of living by opposing any attempt to increase the current density of our suburban neighborhoods.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION. We need to watch over our Measure B clean creeks money to ensure best results. I will maintain Santa Barbara's strict height limitations, particularly in the view corridors, and I will enforce Measure E commercial growth limits. And I will work with the community on issues affecting our coastal environment.

TRANSPORTATION. I support the continued expansion of mass transit, clean energy buses, and I will expand electric buses and trolleys where it is feasible. We need to encourage driving reduction programs, including alternative transportation, carpooling and improved parking.

HISTORICAL PRESERVATION. As a concerned citizen who led efforts to help save Dr. Warren Austin's Val Verde estate, I will fight to preserve and maintain our historical and cultural past whenever possible.

CIVIC DIVERSITY. Santa Barbara is a city of civic diversity, and I will continue as I have always to promote equal access, issues for working families and appreciation for all people. As a Councilmember I will strive to ensure that City departments at all levels reflect the citizens they serve.

My name is #1 on the ballot. Like you, I care deeply about our future, and I hope I can count on your vote.

KEITH COFFMAN-GREY Candidate for Santa Barbara City Council
