Smart Voter Full Biography for Joseph Luke Appleton

Candidate for
Member of City Council; City of Santa Barbara

This information is provided by the candidate

My 25 years of public safety service as a Correctional Officer, U.S. Coastguardsman, Beach Lifeguard, FAA Aviation Safety Counselor and Firefighter/Hazardous Materials Specialist for the City of Santa Barbara has shaped my life and given me experience in the life and death, environmental and economic issues that impact everyone. My unique background and experience will give me the ability to ensure the implementation of Homeland Defense and assist the council in supporting the efforts of public safety officials during these uncertain times.

As a firefighter, for the City of Santa Barbara I gained first hand knowledge about every street in every neighborhood of the city. I have worked and lived in every district of the city, met business owners, responded to emergencies and lifted your children into the cabs of our trucks. I have received certification from the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement as a Clandestine Drug Lab Investigator and from the State as a Hazardous Materials Specialist and Instructor. During my days off, I worked as a flight instructor, earning my gold seal from the FAA, and volunteered as an aviation safety counselor for our local district. I have also coached youth sports teams and used my experience as an Eagle Scout to volunteer as the Scoutmaster for my son's Cub Pack.

My disability retirement from the City Fire Department has presented me with another opportunity to PROTECT, SERVE and PRESERVE our beautiful beach community.
