Over a period of years, K-8 music instruction raises test scores

By Paul F. Diffley, III

Candidate for Member, Governing Board; Murrieta Valley Unified School District

A rising tide floats all boats. By requiring music K-8, we can raise test score for everyone by as much as 51 points
How can that be? Many in-depth studies for the past 10 years show that requiring music instruction starting in kindergarten reaps great rewards.

Recent studies at the University of California---Irvine show that all children in a particular class will perform better on tests because music increases spatial-temporal reasoning.

Spatial-temporal reasoning is the same reasoning that figures into math and science. It is not expensive to operate this program and the long-term results are exciting. Even normal test-taking in lower grades is improved when the teacher plays certain classical music in the background as the test progresses.

A few of our elementary schools, to their everlasting credit, have courageously instituted music programs when they can find a parent or teacher volunteer. With the addition of a weekly comprehensive music program, every elementary child may reap the benefits. String instruments can be introduced by 4th grade and children may learn even more teamwork by participating in orchestra as well as band.

Good music, then, will be a part of their lives forever. Not everyone becomes a full-time musician, but everyone can play an instrument and/or learn to appreciate music for their entire lives, improving their math/science skills as well.
