It is time to redirect Orange Unified to make our school district the best

By Kimberlee "Kim" Nichols

Candidate for Trustee; Orange Unified School District; Area 5

Provide a quality education for all students, maintain fiscal responsibility and be competitive in the educational marketplace that results in a stronger community and improved property values
We can't continue to ignore the fact that our schools compete for limited educational resources. We must work within our budget, embrace the challenge and work hard to make our schools the best so that families want to send their children to Orange Unified. This starts at the community level with a strong partnership between parents, teachers and the school board, and a strong focus on quality education. With an accurate knowledge of district finances, we can now begin the process of rebuilding our district to be competitive with our neighboring districts, and develop for our school district a reputation for providing a top quality education that attracks families and increases property values.

The previous board majority has failed our district by allowing a surplus of approximately 7 million dollars per year, over the last four years. (Sorenson report 10/01) The estimated budget surplus will exceed 31 million dollars by years end. Their failure to properly manage district finances has led to the excessive loss of qualified teachers, over 60% in the last four years. It is a board member's obligation to understand the district finances and work within its resources in a fiscally responsible manner, maximizing these resources for the betterment of students in the Orange Unified School District.
