Form Partnerships,Think Critically, Assess Realistically
Dave Speak emphasizes three main points in
his campaign:
(1) Schools must form partnerships
to fully engage the community's
resources in the education of our children. The
school system cannot simply take up every demand
which our changing community brings to it and
must form creative partnerships with other
community agencies to assure that students come
to school ready to learn and supported in their
educational life goals.
(2) Schools must teach children the critical
thinking skills essential to our information-driven
society. The wealth of information available
through the Internet has washed away some
signposts which helped an older generation assess
the reliability of source material. Now more than
ever we need to ensure that our students can access
and sort information efficiently, assess
information critically, and apply that information
appropriately to important life tasks.
(3) State-imposed assessment measures are a
fact of life for public schools. But in Claremont
we need to make sure that we use a variety of
broad based and realistic measures of our own
choosing in addition to the standardized tests
mandated by California.
These three keystones to the Speak for
Claremont Schools campaign are interrelated,
making the search for RECIPES FOR EACH
STUDENT'S SUCCESS a process of molding
the community's dreams and expectations into
instructional reality.
