We should stick to the provisions of our General Plan
Area 4 has been addressed in detail in the current General Plan for the City of Newark. As a 15-year member of the Newark City Planning Commission, I have had a unique opportunity to participate in the process that has given us the General Plan that we have today. The portion of the Plan for Area 4 has been further legitimized via the ballot box last year with the defeat of Measure C by a 2 to 1 margin; and Area 4 is currently the subject of ongoing environmental studies that, when complete, will give the citizens of Newark a better understanding as to what development possibilities exist on this site. Until such time as this study is complete, this area should remain undeveloped. The challenges of the future are; to find a way to insure that development of this area (if developed) is consistent with our General Plan; and, if no development takes place, the area will not become blight on our city.
