OUR CITY'S BUDGETBy Joseph J. GonzalesCandidate for Mayor; City of South El Monte | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Our city budget was passed six months late. When the city's budget is not a priority then our city is lacking leadership and vision. Our city's fiscal year ends on June 30 every year. Many programs in our city depend on the information that comes from passing the budget. If the budget is not approved than city departments are spending money without the community's or the City Council's input. This year the budget was passed six months late. The Mayor must be aware of this fiscal responsibility and he must be held accountable to the residents. The Mayor must schedule budget meetings before the end of the fiscal year. As your Mayor, one of my primary goals will be to pass a balanced budget by the end of the fiscal year. In 1997, I along with two other City Councilmembers asked for a full and indepth audit of the Finance Department. For the previous 20 years the City Council had the same accounting firm performing the yearly audit. The audit found many problems with the way the Finance Department was operating and a full investigation found the Finance Director had misappropriated money. If we would not have asked for this audit (which the present Mayor voted against) our city would never have known how much money it actually had. These are bold steps which I am proud to take and I will continue to take as Mayor. |
