I am a lifetime Oxnard resident and a former City Solid Waste Superintendent. I was elected in 1996 to the City Council. They have been a very productive four years. I want to continue to be part of the leadership that moves the City in a proactive direction.
Oxnard's financial stability, the City's improving public safety, and the emphases on City staff accountability are three major themes of my campaign. In four years on the Council, we have had balanced budgets, increased general fund reserves, and attracted major corporations, such as Seminis, that bring jobs and economic viability to the City of Oxnard.
The City has increased the police and fire department staffing levels. This has contributed to the overall downward trend in the Oxnard crime rate for the past four years. Oxnard had a crime rate reduction of 12.8% in fiscal year 1998-99. It is one of the lowest in the City's history. The increased fire personnel also help Oxnard maintain a Class II rating which reduces fire insurance rates for residents and businesses.
I am also proud of my contribution to the "Hands Across the River" agreement with the City of Ventura that has halted lawsuits and improved the relationship between the two cities. The completion of the Rose/101 interchange and the progress towards the Santa Clara River Bridge Replacement Project are two city public works projects that are key accomplishments over the last four years.
The refinement of our City organization with focus on accountability and responsiveness to our residents is excellent. I was the driving force in the reestablishment of the Planning Commission, which advises the Council on many complex land use issues. Our Planning Commission brings an expertise and participatory nature to the process that Oxnard needs.
It's all about improving the quality of life.
