Victim Restitution

By Michael S. Metti

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 77

This information is provided by the candidate
Today, crime is just another political government program.
Victims today are robbed twice, first by the thief and then by the government through taxation. Apprehension, trial costs and incarceration of criminals are all at the expense of law-abiding citizens.

What's needed is strong emphasis on victim restitution. Libertarians believe that aggressors should be required to compensate their victims and pay for the costs of their apprehension and trial if found guilty.

Convicted criminals unwilling to make court ordered compensation payments would find themselves in a private work prison. Now in addition to compensating their victims they have the added expense of prison costs. Most thieves probably would make the compensation payments rather than increase their liability and lose their freedom.

Ultimately, the cost of crime would be shifted from law-abiding citizens to the convicted criminals. This is the direction that Libertarians believe to be just.
