Fixing our Schools

By Merritt Lori McKeon, Esq.

An action plan for fixing our school situation
We need new commuter friendly campuses for Cal State Fullerton, to reduce traffic and serve South County's students.

We need money to repair aging facilities and hire new teachers for our elementary, middle and high schools.

We must find a way to integrate local businesses and community groups into the process of education.

I am devoted to making California Schools what they once were - the pride of the nation. We have fallen in the statistics, way down the ladder.

It's not our children's fault - they are wonderful kids. Parents work so hard to keep the children safe, fed and happy, we can't blame them. We must keep our standards high without insisting the children meet higher standards on tests which they must have the skills to meet.

Higher standards will only work if the teachers and facilities are good. Good schools mean good property values. Great schools? Great places to live and have homes and businesses.

Let's keep great schools for everyone as a watchword. Vouchers have been proven to NOT WORK - they take money from the public schools and frankly, it's a waste of time to fight for them. Let's work with local schools and educational experts to find out what they need. Then let's provide it, for our kids.
