To Be A Great Community We Need Successful Children

By Cheryl Martinsen

Candidate for Judge of the Superior Court; County of Sonoma; Office 3

A safe healthy community can be achieved by raising children to be responsible adults.
Many children in our county are struggling with overwhelming problems caused by those who were supposed to be caring for them. Treated in time these children can lead happy and productive lives. I will work to improve the services available for children to ensure they have every opportunity to be successful adults.

We know youth programs outside of Juvenile Hall are the key to a youthful offender's chance to turn him or herself around. The children at the Hall earn points to be placed in an outside program. Unfortunately, we do not have enough spaces in those programs resulting in broken promises to children who so desperately need hope.

The children with the greatest need receive the least amount of help. Our Childrens' Home for abused and abandoned children is overcrowded. Our Juvenile Hall, which houses children as young as 12 is in such deplorable condition that it is unsafe, unhealthy and unable to meet the needs of those it was designed to help. I believe these children can be productive members of our community and I will work to get them the help they need.
