Growth

By Jane Bender

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Santa Rosa

This information is provided by the candidate
I believe we need a balanced rate of growth that will not outstrip our resources and yet give our children and grandchildren a chance to live here.
As I've walked precincts over the last 5 months, I have heard the concerns about growth. I agree that we must control our city's growth, but we have to do it in a well-planned manner. To begin with, we have to take into account that our population will grow because our birth rate is greater than our death rate. People are living longer. With careful planning I believe that we can support a 1.6% growth rate, a rate that won't outstrip our resources and yet allows our children and grandchildren to live nearby.

Careful growth management means we need to incorporate innovative forms of housing for all income levels. I have seen some of the design possiblities and they are exciting.

Careful growth management also means that we must protect and enhance our neighborhoods with trees and parks. As the Director of Sonoma County ReLeaf I have already planted 10,000 trees in Santa Rosa neighborhoods and will continue to advocate for them. In addition, as a former member of the Santa Rosa Board of Community Services, I have worked hard for parks and will also continue to support them vigorously.
