We need to nuture our environmental assets and improve and expand our recreational facilities and opportunities.
In the last three years, Willow Oaks Park has been rebuilt, Seminary Oaks Park has been completd and Alma Park will soon be opened. While these are all great additions to our Park and Recreation programs there is much to be done with imporving and expanding our existing and aging Park and Recreation facilities. During the last decade our pre school and school age population has increased substantially. For the last two years I have been an active member of a citizen task force comprised of residents representing all sectors of recreation and cultural organizations that have jointly worked with the design consultants to develop a master plan. This plan will need to clearly discussed with our residents in order to achieve a successful bond vote. The master plan is envisioned to upgrade and expand recreational opportunities for every park in Menlo Park including a new child care facility at the Burgess Park Civic Center. Our city wide landscape district that attends to the care of our city's urban forest has been overwhelmingly (75%) supported by property owner approval. This strongly demonstrates Menlo Park's concern for our environment. The project to plant 400 trees along El CAmino Real that I am spearheading will both visually improve this otherwise landscape sore and environmental blight in the middle of our City and also be a catalyst to encourage new upgrades to the current land uses. Other projects like SAnta Cruz Avenue west from the downtown that lacks sidewalks for safety and landscape amenities is another worthwile similar project to begin.
As one of the directors of the newly formed Joint Power Authority for the San Francisquito Creek that includes the cities of East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Menlo Park and the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the San Mateo Flood District we have finally begun to address the issues of creek preservation and floor control. This work is important and needs to be solidly supported.
