Although I was born in Indiana, my father was in the Army and our family moved around about every three years. We lived on Army bases in various places in the United Sates and Europe. It wasn't until I was entering junior high school and then high school that I really felt like I could call a place home. And that place was West Lafayette, Indiana. After graduating from a public high school, I attended Purdue University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Education and earned a Master of Science in Education. Upon receiving my graduate degree I went out to Boston and started teaching in a public elementary school in Westwood, Mass. It was during my five years of teaching in this town that I met and married my husband John. In 1969 we moved to San Francisco where we started a family. Out daught Laura was born in 1970 and our son Adam in 1973. For the next several years I was a stay-at-home Mom. In 1976 we moved to Pacifica and my daughter started kindergarten at Pacific Manor and I started teaching at Happy Times Nursery School in San Francisco. Having attended public school all my life and then having taught public school while I lived in Westwood, and having children in public school, my involvement in the local public schools came very naturally. I served on the Pacific Manor PTA Executive Board for 7 years, participated as Room Mother, and was a member of the School Site Council. As my children proceeded through their schooling I participated in vaious parent organizations: Sharp Park PTA Executive Board, Oceana Booster's Club, Oceana Scholarship and Athletic Foundation, and Oceana Parent Advisory Council. I was awarded the Oceana Parent Award in 1988. In the summer of 1988 several people suggested that I might run for the Governing Board of the Jefferson Union High School District. Winning that election, I have served the communities in the JUHSD for the past 12 years. At the same time that I was involved in my children's schools, I also was involved in the Pacifica community. My participation included: volunteering for the Pacifica Park, Beach, and Recreation Department; volunteering for the Pacifica Junior Olympics; participating in the Pacifica Fog Fest; and as a trustee I was involved with the Pacifica Youth Service Bureau and a volunteer for the Pacifica Teen Conferences. Although my children are grown and out of college pursuing their own interests, I still feel very strongly about continuing my involvement as a Governing Board Member of the Jefferson Union High School District. |
