What makes an effective board member?
John Kennedy said, "Local school boards are the backbone of the American society". I strongly concur. A board member should realize first and foremost that we are there for the students. The teachers and administrators and other staff are all represented by professional organizations. The parents and students have only the board members that will lend a compassionate ear. A good board member should never come a meeting with his/her mind made up. We must look at all sides and weigh the consequences of all decisions. A good board member should be prepared do his/her homework and to dedicate the time necessary to do a service to the community. We should visit the school sites, talk privately and corporately to the teachers on an ongoing basis, as well as parents and students. We should represent our district with pride and dignity, and bring upon it a reputation of honesty, and a sense of family. A good board member should know how to express an opinion, as well as how to build consensus for the good of all. A good board member would never be divisive or destructive to any process the system supports and values. A good board member should take seriously the position, and do anything in his/her power to better understand the needs of the district, as well as know all the tools that could come to bear on the meeting of those needs. A good board member would never loose his/her sense of humility along the way...We should never take ourselves too seriously, and never forget why we are there. These are the qualities you can count on me to bring to the board. Your vote and confidence will never be comprimized. My phone number is 805-544-6557, and I would be happy to talk to anyone, any time, on any issue. Vote for Jerry Dagna for San Luis Coastal School Board-Area 1, on November 7th.
