In its most narrow sense, it is viewed as the preservation of the physical aspects of the community.The term "neighborhood preservation" like so many other pressing issues facing the citizens of San Francisco today, lends itself to a variety of interpretations, however, broadly or narrowly defined. In its most narrow sense, it is viewed as the preservation of the physical aspects of the community; such as the preservation of the architectural integrity of the area. However, rarely do the proponents of this method of defining "neighborhood preservation" ever include in their definition, the retention of the economic, social, and ethnic diversity of the area being defined. San Francisco has become a world class destination not simply because of its architecture, but because of its incredible diversity. A diversity that includes people from every corner of the world; every ethnic, and socioeconomic group imaginable. More than 100 languages and dialects are spoken here. Yet, there are those among us who would change all of this in the name of "inevitable progress." Many of them site the "Internet Revolution" as a reason for this change. However, the only thing inevitable about this changes in direction for San Francisco, is the dedication to this change by those who stand to profit the most by it. |
