We have a serious water problem. Our wet winters have not replenished our aquifers and we are running on overdraft. This has created a condition far worse than a shortage; it has lowered our barrier against salt-water and endangered our entire supply of fresh water. Four of our five Directors have served for more than 78 years in toto. The fifth was recently appointed by the other four. They receive compensation for meetings, retirement bendfits and medical insurance. They have spent large sums of money studying our water shortage and salt-water intrusion problems (which are very serious indeed); but they have not taken corrective action. Not all of their public business is conducted in public meetings; and they are reluctant to share important information with the public.
1) Stop salt-water intrusion into our water supply. 2) Develop new sources of water begining with the proposed off-stream diversion of run off water in Soquel Creek. This appears to be an excellent way to secure a new source of water that can be injected into the Purisima Aquifer and initiate the process of reversing salt-water intrusion. 3) Impose an eight year term limit on Board members. Term limits will open four seats on the Board to candidates committed to developing and managing our water resources in our best interests. Santa Cruz County cannot remain an agricultural community without water. |
