Open Communication

By Gary E. Hazelton

Candidate for Director; Soquel Creek Water District

This information is provided by the candidate
Open communication is a valuable tool for effective management of the District.
Our efforts to keep our customers informed of District issues includes a monthly newsletter "What's On Tap" that is mailed to everyone who lives in the District. The newsletter gives updates on major projects, water quality concerns, conservation activities and other District issues. There is a section in "How to reach us" listing our Web Site, e-mail address, mailing address and names of our board members. It also lists the days and time of our board meetings. All board meetings are open to the public and any member of the public can attend and address the board on issues of concern. The board meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. at the District's headquarters.

In October 1997, the board formed a Public Advisory Group (PAG) to evaluate the District's water supply situation and make recommendations on supply projects to the board. The PAG was composed of individuals who represented homowners and business associations, environmental groups, government agencies and private well owners. Twenty five different organizations were represented on the PAG.

We recently redesigned our bills to include information on water use and include news of interest to our customers, including rebate programs.

All correspondence is always responded to in a timely manner either by the General Manager or Board President.

Making efforts to meet with the public, board members and staff participate in community events such as the Business Showcase, Chamber of Commerce events, County Fair and Aptos/LaSelva Fire Department open houses. We are also active in the local schools discussing water issues.

It is important that we have open communication with our customers and we are always seeking ways to improve how that information is received and delivered to you.
