Build more residential housing to attract & keep the talented; provide more affordable housing for the workforce.
The City needs to encourage more homebuilding in order to counter the skyrocketing housing costs and the lack of homes. Our children frequently have to move out of Milpitas if they want to stay near their families. Rent controls do not work. Evidence shows the long-term effects deter builders from adding new projects. We need to encourage affordable housing through our planning policies and advocate higher densities, especially along mass transit corriders like the upcoming Light Rail lines. This will enable our residents and workers, particularly our teachers and service employees, to live and work in Milpitas. I'm very proud to have been involved in four projects that we required to provide a percentage of affordable units to residents: Summerfield, Monte Vista, Parc Metropolitan, and The Crossings at Montague. I am actively pursuing similar projects that will meet this important need.
