A good education is central to improving the lives of Silicon Valley residents.

That's why I'm running for the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District Board of Trustees.

Each day we hear about the prosperity that the new economy is delivering but precious little about those in our community who are experiencing greater income inequality and economic insecurity.

As a San Jose/Evergreen Trustee, I will ensure that our colleges are responding to community needs. I will see that San Jose City and Evergreen Valley College are providing accessible and high quality education to the people who need it # regardless of whether they're preparing for university enrollment, training for technical jobs or learning English as a second language.

I will work hard to help guide our colleges in enhancing our community's quality of life. I'll ask staff and other trustees to join me in forging partnerships with San Jose State University, local schools, community groups and the labor community # promoting ongoing service learning programs that provide students a sense of community involvement in addition to academics.

As a parent, union leader and long-time instructor at San Jose City College, I know how important it is to listen to students and staff and to bring their issues to the Administration. I'll be an activist on the Board of Trustees who'll help develop and fight for groundbreaking new initiatives for the colleges. I'll also be an advocate for appropriate compensation levels for teachers and staff so that we can retain and recruit qualified individuals.
