Candidate Statement

By Bruce A. Broadwater

Candidate for Mayor; City of Garden Grove

This is my candidate statement
NAME: BRUCE BROADWATER AGE: 55 OCCUPATION: MAYOR/DEPUTY LABOR COMMISSIONER

During the time that I have been a part of the City Council, crime has dropped by over 43%, property values have increased by over 30% and over 13,000 additional people now call Garden Grove home. This has been accomplished while keeping Garden Grove at the lowest "government per-person" ratio of all comparable cities in Orange County.

As I look forward to my wife's and my 30th year as Garden Grove residents, I am amazed at the changes in our city, transforming Garden Grove from a bedroom community into a vibrant city with a broad economic base and a constructive vision for the future.

I am proud to have been elected as your Mayor. During my tenure we have seen many important changes to our city, including:

Three new hotels opened, with four more under construction and the Hyatt Alicante Hotel pursuing an expansion of rooms and meeting space;

The opening of the second phase of the Higher Education Center;

Two additional auto dealers moved from Garden Grove Boulevard to the Garden Grove Auto Mall on Trask Avenue;

New homes replacing empty fields, abandoned or dilapidated commercial properties and;

A sixteen-screen movie theater opened at Brookhurst Street and Chapman Avenue.

Garden Grove citizens and taxpayers have also seen a whole new change in attitude in city government and in the community. For example, while I have been Mayor:

More residents have volunteered in the community than ever before;

City employees are dedicating themselves to providing "Top-of-the-Line" customer service;

A non-profit community foundation has been established to improve the community and its image;

The Police Department has embraced community policing, getting the community actively involved in preventing crime;

A first-ever family resource center has been opened, providing after-school programs, parenting information, and other services to help Garden Grove families; and

Our Police Department became the first in California to be fully accredited, and was the only department in the state to be recognized by Good Housekeeping Magazine as "...one of the best suburban police departments in America."

In summary, during my term as Mayor, we have improved City services, improved the appearance of the community, and set the city on the path to a more stable future.

I hope that when you enter the voting booth on Election Day, you will vote for me and help us "stay the course" to an even brighter future.
