Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Denise S. Elsken

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Martinez Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I believe we are now in a time of extreme change in our educational system. The State has challenged us to strive for and meet higher goals, and unlike in the past, is giving us money to implement programs to reach those goals. I believe I have the educational and community experiences to make and support decisions that will turn Martinez Unified into a "lighthouse" District in our nation, guiding and setting the paths for other Districts to serve the needs of all children. We are very fortunate to have a community that provides a lot of support and many, many hours of volunteer service in our schools. I hope to continue building this community support for our schools.

We have now completed the Junior High renovation and are in the process of improving our elementary campuses by using State renovation monies. I want to see our District provide equitable learning facilities for all of our children.

The Performing Arts Center has been on the burner for a long time now. The Board has approved the plans, and I am looking forward to seeing this project through to completion.

We also need to provide our District employees with a safe and adequate facility in which to work. Currently, before entering our District office, you are warned that in the event of an earthquake, the building is unsafe. I commend our District office employees for caring enough about our kids to work in a substandard facility. However, it is now time to provide those workers with a decent place to work.

I respectfully request your support of my candidacy.
