Member, Town Council; Town of Moraga

Historical Perspective: I believe that knowing the history of the Town is the most important foundation a leader can have in making decisions. While my family and I have lived in Moraga almost twelve years, I have made a point of obtaining knowledge of our Town's history from many sources. The reason we incorporated was to control development that many people believed was getting out of control. Our history includes the rejection of planned highways, and the preservation of the semi-rural character, which is emphasized in our General Plan. We like the cul-de sac feeling, low crime, good schools, recreational opportunities, a beatiful natural landscape, and I have worked to preserve such qualities.

Community Involvement: Moraga is a great town because of the strength of volunteerism by so many citizens. I have been involved in many activities and organizations, and I believe it is important for Town leaders to continue to promote community involvement by thanking people and organizations for their contributions.

Examples of some of my work on the Council in furtherance of my philosophy include: 1) settlement of the Palos Colorados project, which included compliance by the developer with the open space ordinance (MOSO), four miles of trails and preservation of Coyote Gulch, 2) cooperation with Lafayette and Orinda on traffic issues through the Tri-Council process, 3) planning and action to increase youth activities, including the hiring of a youth coordinator, instituting Town sponsored activities, and the creation of a highly successful summer basketball league, 4) conservative fiscal management that has created a higher reserve, and a surplus, 5) continuation of a stable and effective staff, and with no increase in personnel, 6) significant progress toward repaving all the streets in town, 7) acceptance of the 250 acre Mulholland Ridge land donation as permanent open space, 8) improvements in facilitating public involvement in meetings, by providing copies of all pending matters to citizens, and by lowering public copying fees, 9) keeping the Town Center project moving forward, and 10) working hard at getting citizen input in the General Plan review.
