Biography Mayor Herman Blackmon was born in Houston, Texas. Upon graduating from Jack Yates High School (Houston), he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957. He received an Honorable Discharge at Castle Air Force Base, Merced, in 1961, and decided to take up residence in Oakland, California. He has lived in Hercules for the past 13 years. For more than twenty-eight years, he has been active in community and youth development in both Alameda and Contra Costa counties; ten of which were devoted to Hercules-Pinole Little League Baseball, the El Sobrante Boys Club and West County Pop Warner Football. In November 1996, Mayor Blackmon was elected to the Hercules City Council. In 1998, Mayor Blackmon retired from Pacific Bell, after 13 years, where he held several management positions: Account Team Manager for both the AT&T and Sprint Accounts, and as a Senior Financial Analyst. Prior to joining PacBell, he held positions with such notable computer industry firms as IBM, UNISYS, and Data General in Marketing, Sales Management and Systems Engineering. Educational milestones include graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of California at Berkeley: an MBA in Finance from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Management, and a BA in Economics. Herman Blackmon has been married for 35 years to Peggy Blackmon. They have two adult sons: Herman Jr., age 34, a graduate of UC Davis; and Marcus, age 21, a Junior at UC Davis, currently pursuing a dual major in Economics and Philosophy. Mayor Blackmon's knowledge of history is well known, which is attributed to his love of reading. Other hobbies include cooking, physical fitness and home improvement projects.
