The "War on Drugs" is Destroying Our Rights & Liberties

By David F. Nolan

Candidate for United States Representative; District 47

This information is provided by the candidate
Gross violations of our rights are being imposed in the name of the cruel, destructive "War on Drugs." This mistaken attempt at regulating people's behavior is simply not working ... and the costs to us, as a society, are immense. We're spending $18 billion a year at the Federal level alone.... enriching the criminal syndicates that now control drug distribution.... and shredding the Bill of Rights.
The so-called "War on Drugs" is more accurately described as a War on The Bill of Rights. This tragic, misguided and cruel policy is destroying lives and threatening the liberties of every American. And it isn't even working! The government's own figures show that less than 20% of the drug traffic into this country is intercepted.

The social costs of this failed policy are astounding. The United States now has over _two million_ people in prison -- the largest prison population, per capita, of any nation on Earth. And we're freeing rapists and murderers to make room for medical marijuana users.

This misguided, tragic policy must end. We must stop treating drug use as a crime, and treat all forms of addiction the same way we treat alcohol abuse. We should educate people about the dangers of drug abuse and provide treatment for those who suffer from this problem. But we must stop using police-state tactics to solve social problems.

As a Libertarian, I am firmly committed to reducing the size, cost, power and intrusiveness of government at all levels... and there is no better place to start than by ending the "War on Drugs."
