Cuts in education spending over the last two decades have placed California forty-second out of the fifty states in per capita spending for our students. We must put our children and their education first.
- Allow school boards to give merit bonuses to teachers to attract and keep the best educators.
- Offer State income tax credits and deductions for post-secondary education, similar to those offered against federal income taxes.
- Allow local school boards to make more decisions and set standards higher than at the State level.
- Outlaw "social promotions" of students who don't meet minimum standards.
- Allow school boards to take violent and disruptive students out of the classroom.
- Encourage school districts to focus on the basics: reading, writing, math, and science.
- Mandate that schools receive their fair share of State Lottery revenues and Prop. 98 funds as passed by California voters.
- Emphasize new teacher retention with monetary bonuses.
- Institute State-funded new teacher mentor programs.
