Competence, fairness, and civility preserve the justice system

By Jeff Bosshard

Candidate for Judge of the Superior Court; County of Santa Cruz; Office 4

This information is provided by the candidate
We have to maintain civility and respect in all court proceedings. No judge should ever be biassed or rude!!! Otherwise, citizens will feel excluded from the justice system.
Too many citizens are leaving court with a bad taste in their mouths. They believe that the judge did not know the law, or did not treat them fairly and respectfully. This should never happen! But a recent survey by our Courts revealed that it is so. The Judges have even signed a "civility pledge" as part of a five-year plan to help restore the Court's image.

If you have to stand before a judge with your life, liberty or property on the line, you hope to God he or she is competent. You want to believe you are getting a fair shake. You do not want one who is biassed against you due to your race, gender, or whatever. Finally, if you have a competent judge who is fair, you also want to be treated with respect.

Great Judges must be good people first. And good people do not need surveys to tell them what to do, nor civility pledges to restore public confidence. All that is needed is judges with compassion and a healthy dose of humility -- a willingness to serve the ends of justice. That is why I am running.
