I am currently the 2nd District supervisor elected in 1996. I was born in Scotia, graduated from Eureka High School, and attended College of the Redwoods and California Polytechnic University studying agriculture. I am a cattle rancher with land in the Mattole and Bear River area. I have been an officer of the Humboldt Cattlemen`s Association, a member of the county Fish and Game Commission and of the College of the Redwoods Alumni Association. I teach a class at the College of the Redwoods. I am proud of the accomplishments of the Board of Supervisors during my term. We have been successful in coping with the continual budget difficulties. I was instrumental in replacing the former county administrative officer and the planning director. We developed a fair and workable system for evaluating department heads and have been able to grant wage increases to county employees while still balancing budgets. The $22 million that the county has received as part of the Headwaters settlement will be invested in an endowment fund that should produce at least $1 million for economic development each year. I will seek to direct this money to existing industries. I`m not so big on bringing in new outside businesses to compete with the folks we already have here. I consider the deteriorating condition of the 1200 miles of county roads and many bridges rebuilt after the 1964 flood to be a major problem and will continue to work on a solution. The Campaign Against Marijuana Production has accomplished little relative to its cost. The money would be better directed to other drug and law enforcement problems that cause greater social harm. I am doubtful that the Northwestern Pacific Railroad can ever become economically viable, given the immense costs of stabilizing the line through the Eel River Canyon. I think I have accomplished a lot in the past three years by using common sense. People know my way of thinking and where I stand. I would appreciate your vote to reelect me as the 2nd district supervisor. Thankyou. |
