The Board of Supervisors, District 4 Seat demands proven leadership with vision and compassion, an aptitude to comprehend complex issues, and the stamina required to shape the future of one of California's major counties. Our district is a unique combination of urban, rural and suburban landscapes. Our neighborhoods compose the richest blend of cultural diversity in the entire state. These extraordinary assets constitute our strengths but also create competing interests and challenges. I will build bridges between our many communities, businesses and governing bodies by considering all voices and being fair-minded in my decision. I will be creative and relentless in my will to create a common vision for our neighborhoods that sets high standards for education, opportunity, health, safety, and a clean environment. I have a history of over 30 years of public service, starting as a student organizer, educator and non-profit and government administator of programs affecting the poor and disenfranchised. As a community organizer, I have been at the forefront of issues such as affirmative action, immigrant rights, health care, and bilingual education. I have designed community resonse programs to hate crimes and have trained school districts throughout California on hate crime prevention. As a Planning Commissioner, I have been fair and inclusive, and understand the need for community input in the development process. At the same time, I push for efficiency in the process so that business and development projects will continue to invest in our communities. My life has been a march for social and economic changes which would benefit working people, and society on the whole. I take this philosophy to heart in every leadership position I have been involved with. I plan to draw from my political and professional experience to:
