RESOLVING THE SEWER ISSUE

By Paul S. Jahn

Candidate for Council Member; City of Montgomery

This information is provided by the candidate
The City of Montgomery has entered into an agreement with the Metropolitan Sewer District to use Montgomery taxpayers money to provide for the repair and upgrading of the sewer service connections for 59 pieces of property.
The Metropolitan Sewer District is telling the City, that before any substantial sewer repairs can be done by the District, Montgomery must eliminate the surface water infiltration of the sanitary sewers by the 59 known properties in violation.

There is little or no probability that the sewer backup problem will be solved by repairing the sewer connections for the 59 offending properties.

The main sewage trunk line under Montgomery Road has not been upgraded since the 1950's. A significant number of homes and commercial developments have been built in Montgomery since that time.

Additional pending developments including the Twin Towers, the Jewish Community Center and the new Montgomery Elementary School will only compound the existing overload.

We favor the passage of the November Sewer Ballot Initiative. The answer is for the Metropolitan Sewer District to do the job correctly from the beginning and replace or repair the existing sewer lines, enlarge them where needed, and provide for the increase in volume by repairing or enlarging the Sewage Treatment Plant. We should not settle for anything less.
