Our challenges include local control of schools, continuing the upward rise in standardized test scores and the maintenance of aging school facilities as well as the construction of new schools for our exploding student population.
As we postulate about the desire for local control of our schools, we need to encourage our parents to be directly involved in the education of their children. Public education will succeed when the student, school and home work together on behalf of the child. While all parents want their children to succeed, barriers may exist that prevent parents from realizing the academic goals for their children. We must continue to find ways to educate the children as well as promote parental involvement in the educational process.
Standardized test scores have continued to spiral upward for all children in Orange Unified; we are studying the strengths and developing a plan of attack to address the weaknesses that need to be turned into assets; each school has different needs and these are formulated into an individualized school plan for success.
Many of our schools are over 40 years old and need to be repaired; while there is state money and district money set aside for these projects, the needs outnumber the available funds. Compounded upon this challenge, is the growing population of studnets entering Orange Unified. In the last two years, we opened two new schools to full capacity. School sites and construction monies need to be allocated for these schools that include elementary, middle school and high schools as well.
I look forward to working with our community to meet these important challenges for the benefit of the students who are rapidly becoming the consumers and citizens of the new millennium.
