To fund local highway, street and road improvements throughout Snohomish County, shall Snohomish County levy an additional excise tax on motor vehicle fuel of 2.3 cents ($.023) per gallon for ten years to collect an estimated $60,000,000 for distribution to the County and the cities within the County, as provided in County Ordinance No. 98-040?
Proposition 1 does not raise all the money needed. Proposition No. 2 finances $60 million more of transportation improvements using the local option gas tax increase of 2.3 cents per gallon. If the proposition passes, vehicle owners in Snohomish County will pay an extra 2.3 cents per gallon over ten years. This will cost about $17 per year for a vehicle driven 15,000 miles per year and averaging 20-mpg.
- Summary of Arguments FOR ASCENT 21 Proposition 2:
- It is time to fund more local transportation improvements with local dollars and a local plan.
Funding is for CRITICAL local transportation projects named by local leaders and is necessary to keep up with population and business growth.
- Summary of Arguments AGAINST ASCENT 21 Proposition 2:
- Higher gas taxes will force people to buy gas in King or Skagit Counties and put retail owners out of business in Snohomish County.
Higher taxes will place a burden on low-income persons and other taxpayers.
