Reducing Crime

By Ron Packard

Candidate for United States Representative; District 48

This information is provided by the candidate
Crime in America is out of control. Since 1960 alone, total crime in the United States has tripled, while violent crime has soared by more than 550 percent. The rate of violent crime in America is worse than in any other industrialized country in the world. Ron Packard believes that Americans should not have to be afraid to leave their houses at night, send their children to school, or take a walk around the neighborhood for fear of being victims of violent crime. He has consistently supported tough anti-crime measures and is working hard to ensure safe streets, safe neighborhoods, and safe schools for every American.

Fewer than 10 percent of all criminals commit two-thirds of all crimes. That's because lenient sentences, luxuriously equipped prisons, and early release programs make our criminal justice system a joke. Repeat offenders know that the punishment rarely fits the crime in America. In fact, fewer than one in ten serious crimes results in imprisonment, and the average time served for our most condemned offense (murder) is only five years! The message to criminals is that in this country, crime does pay.

Ron Packard believes that the rights of the innocent must take precedence over the comforts of the convicted. He supports mandatory full sentencing for repeat offenders, denial of bail for criminals with a history of violent offenses, and victim restitution rights. Ron has also worked to eliminate perks for prisoners and believes that inmates simply should not have tennis courts, cable television, or special privileges that many honest American families cannot afford. Criminal behavior is unacceptable, and it should not be tolerated or encouraged by a liberal mockery of criminal justice.

Ron knows that until government takes a clear position on crime and demands real punishment, the criminal mentality will never change. He is outraged by so-called "crime bills" that are big on social spending and soft on criminals. Violent crime is a real problem with real victims. Ron is committed to finding serious solutions so that Americans can again feel safe in their own homes, businesses, and schools.
