If we are to provide the most basic of necessities for our residents we need to solve the housing crisis. If we are to maintain our treasured diversity of culture, ethnicity, and ideas, we need to solve the housing crisis. Some ideas toward this ideal but certainly not
all are explored.
Community living is already a fact of life in San Francisco. We call it sharing an apartment. Why not
build new housing structures with this in mind where
individuals could share but still have privacy and live
in comfort. Present housing configurations do not meet theneed. We should also change the mandate that new housing have accessible parking. Providing bike lanes and bike storage would obviate the need for more cars in many cases.
Legalizing in-law apartments that meet all safety and health standards is another way to increase housing. The caveat being that no new parking be provided. The elderly
and handicapped would benefit as most do not own cars.
Building above one story store structures would be another way to increase housing without compromising the integrity of our historical and the unique character and
ambience of our community housing structures. Again no housing of or space for cars.
Using empty lots for building housing.Using underutilized or abandoned structures for housing.
All housing should be built, restored or maintained with the ideal of being affordable for families and averge income earning residents.
Brining the Freeway down south of Market and building roadways on Octavia would free up about 10 acres of land that could be used for housing.
And finally restricting the abuse of some landlords to evict for the purpose of financial gain should be legislated.
