OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED EL TORO AIRPORTBy Peter K. RundleCandidate for Governing Board Member; Irvine Unified School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I am strongly opposed to the plans being developed by the County of Orange to convert the existing El Toro MCAS to a commercial airport. Like all of us who live in Irvine, I believe the development of a commercial airport so close to our homes and schools would have a terrible impact on the quality of life in our community, as well as the quality of the educational experience for our children. As you are no doubt aware, the biggest challenge to Irvine in many years is the threat of a commercial airport at El Toro MCAS. Notwithstanding the fact that virtually every citizen in south Orange County opposes the County's airport plans, the County Board of Supervisors seems determined to push forward with the development of a commercial airport. Already, many concerned citizens and local governments are joining forces to challenge the County's airport plans. Challenges to the sufficiency of the County's environmental impact report have been advanced. Legal challenges will undoubtedly continue for years to come. However, opposition to the proposed airport must be broad based, and include more than expensive legal battles. Indeed, a political solution will, in the end, prove to be the most reliable mechanism for defeating the County's development plans so close to our community. I will speak out in opposition to the proposed airport, and will work with others in the community and in city government ensure that our children, schools and community are not made to suffer under the thunder of jets overhead. |
