Traffic Problems

By Len Miller

Candidate for City Council; City of Newport Beach; District 1

This information is provided by the candidate
We need to determine what our problems are in regard to traffic and related matters and what we are going to settle for until we can achieve our goals and objectives. Lets do this ourselves initially without spending money on consultants.
I take the position that traffic problems in the City of Newport Beach need to be looked at in a special way. And that we need to develop a plan to improve the worsening situation. I think we should tap the minds of some of our more knowledgeable property owners, both residential and commercial, and come up with a consensus or policy plan as to how to deal with all of the traffic and related issues now. Consultants may be good for measuring the level of service of a particular stretch of road, but it is up to us to determine what we want. After we decide that, then we can hire experts if need be to help us implement the plan.

Why don't we increase public partcipation in dealing with this issue? It seems to me that too often specialized interests make their own point of view paramount without considering the true impact of what it is that they propose to do. I believe in placing greater importance on the opinions expressed by our homeowner and community associations within the City. In fact, where there are none we should establish neighborhood groups to meet, discuss and make recommendations to the Cioty Council on issues of concern such as traffic. It is important that everyone's view be heard if they wish to express it.

While I do not necessarily support "moritoriums" I do not think that we should continue to approve development projects of the scale of the proposed expansion of Newport Dunes, until measures to handle increased traffic can become part of the development plan, if they can. Solutions! That is what we need now!
