THE HEADLANDS

By Eric James

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Dana Point

This information is provided by the candidate
I am Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission which designed Alternative A.
I'm very proud of my work to bring about a specific plan for the Headlands. The plan insures the Headlands will be preserved just as it is viewed in the City of Dana Point seal. It also conserves lands so future generations can experience the Headlands just as Richard Henry Dana did when he found it. And it allows significant land upon which to build new communities. When use of the visitor-recreation space is determined, added income will be generated for the city. Much has been said about a hotel being built on Strands Beach. Alternative A does not specifically mandate a hotel. Alternative A simply states that a certain parcel of land is to be used for vistor serving recreational use. This may include a hotel, a theatre, a community center, or any variety of uses. The choice of use remains with a developer. The actual use will be determined when a developer brings a plan to the Planning Commission for approval and the plan is adopted by the City Council. The Headlands has given identity to Dana Point which it did not possess previously.Residents of Dana Point are now recognized as a vocal and pro-active society who are ready to accept challenges which they determine undesirable Dana Pont works hard and long to bring about fair solutions. The Headlands also produced a negative effect for Dana Point. It divided the City between "Us" and "Them." A new City Council must view itself as inclusionary, & insure that all sides are considered, regardless of the specific issue.
