The sale of Gisler School Site and Sport fields has become and issue in the November election. Bob Mann and Shirley Carey support the re-opening of Gisler as a middle school or a dual site to reduce overcrowding at existing schools. Are you aware that the sale of Gisler School site has become an issue in the Huntington Beach City School District Board of Trustees election campaign. As the November 3rd election draws near members of the community should be aware of the issues and the potential negative impact of this election on both educational opportunities and sports activities for children in this community! The growth patterns in local neighborhoods, the enrollment growth studies and the expansion of class size reduction programs suggest that it is time to seriously consider reopening an elementary school and / or a middle school. Sower's Middle School enrollment is approaching 1200 students with many portables in place. All K-5 schools are full to capacity. Due to the influx of younger families, the school population is growing. Class size reduction programs have necessitated the need for more classrooms. As advocates for the community Bob Mann and I advised against the sale of the Gisler site in 1996. The continuing growth in the community and uncertainty regarding the implementation of class size reduction were important considerations, and the low price quotes that came at the bottom of the real estate market were unacceptable. Gisler is now leased to a private school for $120,000 per year. If enrollment trends continue this site could be reopened as a middle school, K-5 school or dual site with ongoing use of the fields by youth sports programs. Once the land is sold, it will be irreplaceable for both the district and the community. I am committed to making the best long term decisions for our current and future students. Gisler is the largest site and provides the best options for students and the community. To protect this important community asset citizens need to get informed, get involved and get out the vote on November 3rd. Call me at 714-968-7287.to discuss this important community issue. |
