The opportunity costs of leaving these 250 acres unimproved have been enormous...for both the owner and the City.There are several reasons to encourage reputable business investment in San Clemente. Our city has suffered many fiscal setbacks this decade. Now, the economy has improved and there is renewed economic interest in South County. Through increased sales taxes, we have an opportunity to stabilize our budget, restore lost services, improve public amenities and help provide for repair of our aging infrastructure. Many San Clementeans complain there are not adequate places to shop or receive basic services. Teens and young adults ask for better recreation and entertainment. The result, of course, is that we spend our money elsewhere, enriching other communities with our sales tax dollars. Finally, the Lusk Company has been carrying the costs of ownership for more than 20 years. It has a right to develop its property within community standards. We should cooperate reasonably toward mutual benefits. At some point, the owner may be forced to litigate, which would cost the City millions of dollars it can't afford. If the Marblehead Coastal development is in keeping with the image and character of our City, I see no downside, |
