Ralph H. Bauer was born in Los Angeles of immigrant parents. He attended North Hollywood High School. Ralph entered UCLA in 1948 and graduated in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. Ralph spent two years in the U.S. Navy before he returned to UCLA in 1954. He worked on the steric and electronic effects of the Paracyclophane Series with Professor Donald J. Cram and received the Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1958. Ralph then joined Shell Development Corporation as a Research Scientist, and in 1966, he joined Unocal as a Research Chemist. He became the International Marketing Manager of the Petrochemical Division of Unocal in 1983. Ralph was one of the founding members of the UCLA Chemistry Advisory Council as well as the UCLA Association of Chemists and Biochemists. He holds a number of patents and is the author of a number of scientific papers. Ralph retired from Unocal in 1985. Ralph married Charlene Uhlik in 1952. Ralph and Charlene have two children, Elaine and Eric, and between them, five grandchildren. Ralph has actively participated in many community service areas, including the Board of Trustees of the Huntington Beach Union High School District, the Ocean View Elementary School District, the Huntington Beach Planning Commission and many aspects of Huntington Beach City and Orange County Government. He is currently a Councilman in the City of Huntington Beach, and past mayor of Huntington Beach. PERSONAL • Married to Charlene for 46 years. Two children and five grandchildren. • Attended Los Angeles city schools and graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1948 • Received a B.S. with honors (1952) and a Ph.D. (1958) in Chemistry from U.C.L.A. The Ph.D. thesis foreshadowed the research by Professor Donald J. Cram for which Cram received the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Author of a number of scientific papers and patents. • Played freshman basketball during Coach John Wooden's first year at U.C.L.A. • Served in combat aboard Minesweepers in the Korean War. • Employed first by Shell Oil and then by Unocal over a 27-year career in positions ranging from Research Chemist to International Marketing Manager. • Currently retired and devoting time to civic affairs and fund-raising for U.C.L.A. Received Seaborg Medal in 1992 - Given for outstanding service to the U.C.L.A. Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. • Received Man of the Year Award from Huntington Valley division of the American Heart Association. • Received with my wife, Charlene, "Golden Stars of the Year" award from Goldenwest College. • Received "Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Human Relations" award from the Orange County Human Relations Commission. |
