Answers to Important Questions for Bakersfield

By Mark C. Salvaggio

Candidate for Member of City Council; City of Bakersfield; Ward 7

This information is provided by the candidate
1. What is the most significant issue the city will face in the next four years? The most important issue is having control of local revenues so that we can continue to provide a high level of service to the public in the areas of streets, roads, freeways, police and fire protection, park maintenance, affordable housing, recreation programs, and other vital City services. We must be able to keep the revenues we have now and prevent the state and federal governments from taking them to balance their budgets.

2. How can you contribute to dealing with that issue? I will continue to provide leadership while ensuring that these issues are on the agenda and addressed by the City Council. I will continue to respond to the service needs of the citizens of Bakersfield and I will try to convince our state and federal legislators that it is in the public's best interest to preserve local revenue.

3. What are your thoughts on annexation? I support the annexation of "county islands" surrounded by the city and other unincorporated areas contiguous to the city limits. The urban sprawl that is occurring in the unincorporated areas within metropolitan Bakersfield has created a duplicated and inefficient network of expensive city and county government services which sap citizen tax dollars. Above all, the annexation process should be above board and provide appropriate notification to affected residents to insure their right to know and be informed.
