Open letter to Eureka

It has been a pleasure and a challenge to represent you as Mayor. I would appreciate your vote. In return, I will continue to represent you and this city with dignity and respect.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support for my tenure as Mayor of Eureka. As we move toward the new Millennia, we have much to be proud of. In the city of Eureka you have seen a dramatic drop in crime, a renewed faith in our future (and our leadership!) You see new investment in our downtown and our beautiful waterfront. We have won awards, nationwide, for our innovative approaches to making our city more "livable". . . a place to be proud of. As I prepare to run for my last term as Mayor, we begin an exciting time for economic development for our entire region. We have survived earthquakes, wind, rains, and environmental constraints, but all the economic indicators are up! We have come through the worst of times, and I believe that we will look back on the ‘90's and say, "That's when we created a renaissance for Eureka!"

I believe that as we make our downtown and our waterfront more beautiful and accessible for us, we create economic opportunities as well as reduce crime. Hand in hand with developing this blighted area comes benefits that will be profound . . . new parks, view corridors, and public promenades and boardwalks, to and along the bay, creating wonderful access for all of us.

We know we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Let's maximize our opportunities. To meet these goals we need progressive leadership. We can redefine the term "politician." We elected officials are here to serve our community and it is a privilege to do so. With a committed, creative, and ethical Council and Mayor, and your involvement, we can move forward to the new Millennia with a renewed commitment to maximize our opportunities, strengthen our existing industries, and make this beautiful North Coast an even more wonderful place to live and work. We have come so far together. Let's stay the course. I would appreciate your vote for my last term representing you as your Mayor.
