We should settle for nothing less than the best schools in the nation.
We should settle for nothing less than the best schools in the nation, not only for our sons and daughters, but because we could make no better investment as a state. Excellence in education is the best way to attract high-paying employers and to provide highly skilled workers. We need to keep teacher/student ratios low. We need to achieve fairness in funding; the poorer districts need to have educational opportunity on a par with the wealthier districts. All students need to have the opportunity to be instructed in art, music, physical education. Extracurricular activities need to be available to all, not just those that can afford to pay fees. We need to retain the right of school districts to pass school bond issues. And charter schools must be public schools, open to students regardless of which neigborhood they live in or what their background may be. Charter schools should be held to the same standards as public schools, such as teacher certification and separation of church and state.
