Term Limits and Improved Government Practices

By Barry MacMurray

Candidate for State Representative; District 25

Term limits could lead to a more effective and responsible government. They could open to door to improved government operation and better "customer service" for the people.
Most politicians say and do things not because they truly believe they are the just or ethical, but because they think those words and actions will get them reelected. Reelection means even more power, and multiple reelection can equate to massive personal power in the hands of a very few. That's why I am a strong believer in reasonable term limits, especially for Legislators at the state and federal level.

Because massive political power is concentrated in the hands of those long-term politicians that created our seniority-based system of government, I understand that true believers in term limits will have to seek reelection many times to get into a position to implement term limits. It will also take a "grass roots" movement of the voters from each state who support those of us who believe the lack of term limits has created some of the political monstrosities with which we currently live.

Term limits will open the door to a more equitable and efficient political system; one in which we, the "customers" of government, can get the "customer service" our government was created to provide.

All organizations, be they businesses, charities, social clubs, or governments, are created for two purposes; to create customers, and to meet the needs of those customers. An organization does not have to have a profit motive to benefit from the organizational and administrative practices of business. While it may be inappropriate for most governments to be run as if they were a privately held company, commonsense management practices are appropriate for any successful organization.

One area where government at most levels could benefit from the lessons of their corporate cousins is in the realm of incentive and motivation. This is most noticeable when it comes to their policies on Welfare, and Drug Abuse and Crime. The preceding clickable links give simple examples of how the government could use its authority, and our money, to reform welfare, reduce drug abuse, and control crime.
