All legislative districts should have the choices that await voters in District 25 for the House of Representatives, including the two Democratic incumbents Ken Cheuvront and Christine Weason.

...

The decisions that await the Legislature in the next session require fresh thinking and energizing perspectives.

District 25 voters deserve fresh approaches, dynamic ideas and new solutions.

That's why our recommendation for the second seat goes to John Buttrick, Libertarian.

Buttrick distinguished himself and his party in his campaign for governor four years ago. He was - and is - a class act, brimming with imaginative ideas in the well-reasoned mold that our Founding Fathers first crafted.

From moving to abolish the state income tax, to fighting for parents' rights to educate their children at home, Buttrick will be a welcome spice in the brew of intellectual mediocrity that too often bubbles to the top in the Legislature.

"In this election," he says, "you have two votes for state representative. If you feel you must spend one of them on an old party candidate, then do so. But please don't waste your second vote also. Cast it for John Buttrick. Don't we deserve at least one out of 90 state legislators to be an independent voice not controlled by the old political parties?"

We think all of Arizona would benefit by John Buttrick's representation in the Arizona Legislature.

Sometimes praise about a candidate like John Buttrick falls short of endorsement (often because of the perception that he "can't win") -- yet the praise is effusive and enthusiastic. Here are some examples from John's last campaign.

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT JOHN BUTTRICK

John Buttrick made a BIG impression on people during his political debut, the 1994 race for Governor in Arizona. When the media in Arizona do more than snicker at a Libertarian candidate, you know something special is going on! Here are some of the remarks published by political commentators about John Buttrick.

"One of the most articulate minor party candidates to emerge in years."
--Keven Willey, Arizona Republic

"Solid Gubernatorial timber."
-- Ron Harris, Arizona Republic

"Bright and very articulate."
-- Francie Noyes, Arizona Daily Star (Tucson)

"The engineer driving the gubernatorial debate."
-- Keven Willey, Arizona Republic

"Offered the most interesting ideas in the most effective way."
--Keven Willey, Arizona Republic

"The big winner (of the debates)"
-- John Kolbe, Arizona Republic

"John Buttrick was good -- very good (in the debates)."
--Joel Nillson, Arizona Republic

Excerpts from a column by E.J. Montini in the Arizona Republic, comparing Buttrick to his major-party opponents:

"The most intelligent candidate running for governor."

"The most knowledgeable."

"The most innovative."

"The most articulate."

"The most level-headed."

"The most politically independent."

"The most philosophically grounded."

"Achieved a moral victory."

"It's the type of accomplishment that neither the Republicans or the Democrats could match."

"The Libertarian did so well that no more debates were held."

"(Buttrick) was particularly impressive with his knowledge of the issues and his well-reasoned and innovative proposals for change."
-- from a 1996 editorial in the Arizona Republic ... two years after the campaign!
