John A. Buttrick was born in Providence, R.I., on July 10, 1947. After attending public schools through his graduation from high school, John joined the United States Army in 1966 and served four years in the Army Security Agency reaching the rank of Sergeant. During his years of service, John spent tours of duty in Turkey and South Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged in 1970.

After the service, John attended the University of Denver and graduated summa cum laude in 1973 with departmental honors in philosophy. John also had dual minors in political science and history. Following his graduation from the University of Denver, John attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1976.

In 1976, John joined the Phoenix, Arizona law firm of Brown & Bain, P.A. and was made a partner in 1981. Brown & Bain presently has offices in Phoenix, Tucson and Palo Alto, Calif., and is a full-service law firm of approximately 100 lawyers. John's career as a litigator has seen him represent large corporations and individuals in a variety of business disputes in federal and state courts across the country.

John has lived in District 25 for the last nine years and has supported youth programs, the Phoenix Symphony and the Phoenix Theater. Recently John coached a local high school mock trial team as a volunteer.

John has five children (including two stepchildren and two adopted children) and is married to the former Mary Anne Elia.

In 1994, John was the Libertarian Party candidate for governor of Arizona and was only the second Libertarian candidate to appear in three-way televised debates with Republican and Democratic candidates.
